Celebrating Moyra Williams: Fellowship of the CIBD

On Friday, 28th November 2025, the Southern Section of the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers (CIBD) hosted their 1st annual dinner at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, to celebrate the first year as the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers and to honour individuals who have passed CIBD exams and made outstanding contributions to the brewing and distilling industry. Among those recognised was Moyra Williams, Technical Sales Manager at Kersia UK, who was awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the CIBD.

A Brief Look Back: The Origins of CIBD

The CIBD has a rich history dating back to 1886, when it was originally formed as The Laboratory Club. At that time, brewing and distilling looked very different from today. There were nearly 20,000 licensed breweries in the UK, with giants like Arthur Guinness in Dublin and William Bass in Burton-on-Trent leading the way. Dark, porter-style beers dominated for decades, but lighter pale ales were beginning to rise in popularity thanks to advances in fermentation science.

Beer quality was often inconsistent, and remedies were sold to counteract impurities, including dangerous levels of arsenic. In distilling, Coffey Stills were revolutionising production for gin and whisky, while most distilleries still relied on traditional pot stills. Science was only just being accepted into the industry, with pioneers like Pasteur, Hansen, and Siebel shaping the future of brewing and distilling.

Moyra’s Inspiring Journey

Moyra’s career reflects the same spirit of progress and collaboration that has defined the industry for over a century. Starting out in the 1980s, when female brewers were rare, Moyra became a trailblazer. She joined the Southern Section of the then Incorporated Brewers Guild, holding key roles such as Secretary and Treasurer, and always worked to encourage and support others, especially women in brewing.

After 10 years in Australia, Moyra returned to the UK and rejoined the committee, helping to create educational and social programmes that brings brewers together to share knowledge and learn. Her Fellowship is a testament to decades of dedication, leadership, and passion for the craft.

A Central Role at Kersia UK

In Moyra’s Own Words

"I feel very humbled to receive the Fellowship of the CIBD. This recognition means so much to me because it reflects years of working alongside incredible people in an industry I love. From the early days when there were very few women in brewing, to now seeing a more inclusive and collaborative community, it’s been an amazing journey. I’ve always believed in sharing knowledge and supporting others, and I’m proud to continue that mission every day at Kersia UK."

A Well-Deserved Honour

The evening included a presentation by Tom Shelston, CEO of the CIBD, who spoke about Moyra’s contributions before presenting her with the official certificate. This recognition celebrates not only Moyra’s achievements but also her commitment to fostering community and innovation within the brewing and distilling world.

Congratulations, Moyra, from all of us at Kersia UK; we’re proud to have you on our team!
